Industry&Art Exhibition at PFW 2011 Venue

Nearly two weeks before Portland Fashion Week 2011, Vigor Industrial Shipyard presents another event focusing on eco- consciousness and the arts. This Thursday, September 22nd, kicks off “Industry&Art: The River Runs Through Us” a juried exhibition of multimedia artists organized by the Working Waterfront Coalition (WWC). The four day long event serves to celebrate the relationship between the harbor industries’ people and businesses and the Portland community at large. Harbor businesses contribute tens of thousands of jobs to our local community and over a billion dollars to our economy.  WWC is an organization of these businesses, all of which emphasize environmental health and want to ensure the continued vitality of the Portland Harbor. WCC president, Alan Sprott, expands on the idea: “The WCC recognizes that the first step in ensuring the continued vitality of harbor businesses is to engage the citizens of our community, to let them know who WWC is and the advocacy work it does to promote environmental, social and economic sustainability. What better what to do that than art?”

The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, film and much more. Saturday and Sunday add activities for kids and families—jet boat tours, opportunities to board the last steam-powered tugboat built in the US, an upclose view of a WWII boat and raffles. Indusry&Art is free to the public with a suggested $5 donation. All proceeds from donations and activities plus a portion of the sale of art will go to industrial job training and environmental initiatives: two organizations that support critically important issues for the harbor businesses.
