Portland Fashion Weekly’s Fall 2011 Collections Series: Jonathan Joseph Peters

This post marks the first of a series of posts on Portland Fashion Weekly featuring the Fall 2011 collections of Portland Fashion Week designers.

First we feature Project Runway Season 7 Finalist and New York City based designer Jonathan Joseph Peters. He showed in Portland Fashion Week for the first time last year and his colorful and fun Spring 2011 Collection was definitely one we won’t soon be forgetting. For his Fall 2011 Collection, The Garden of Colorless Flowers, he seemingly went in the opposite direction for his inspiration:

“This collection began with a meditation of depression. As something nearly everyone experiences I found there to be a deeply human beauty about it. I imagined a world where all happy colors like pink, yellow, orange, and red had been drained to just leave behind shades of blue and green. The models are styled the same regardless of ethnicity and wear masks of their own faces to give the illusion of a “cookie-cutter” otherworldly being submerged in a headspace where robotic meets romantic.”

Even though the inspiration comes from a darker place, the pieces in this collection keep with his design aesthetic of sharp and tailored lines mixed with long and flowing silhouettes.

Jonathan Joseph Peters (Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010)

Jonathan Joseph Peters rocked my senses with an outstanding ready-to-wear collection. It consisted of a chic arrangement of bold prints and different fabric textures. Not to mention his ever-fabulous ability to create volume out of light fabrics.

All of the pieces were unique and perfectly garnished with chunky necklaces and belts high on the waist. You can see clearly in his designs that Jonathan has a knack for personalization.

All of the garments had character and personality that thrilled the crowd. A blue and green mod, jungle-fever print was used in different ways and I loved every single one of the variations! The mood of the garments was a little more down-to-earth than Jonathan’s previous collections, though plentiful with high-fashion elements.

These were a sexy, versatile set of garments that could be worn for different occasions. Jonathan is an inspiring designer because he stays true to his aesthetic with a keen eye on color, texture and balance in each of his pieces with a touch of avant-garde.
